Red Pill Music is pleased to announce the signing of Boston-based singer-songwriter Jen Kearney. - January 27, 2011
Kearney and her band, The Lost Onion, have released three albums since 2002. Her most recent release, 2009′s The Year Of The Ox, received rave reviews for its unique, seamless blend of soul, folk, rock, Latin, and jazz. Her back catalog will be available on Red Pill’s website, redpillonline.com, beginning January 11, 2011.
For Kearney, the decision to join forces with Red Pill came after meeting fellow Red Pill singer-songwriter Amy Petty at a festival in the summer of 2010. Kearney was impressed, not only with the quality of Petty’s recordings, but also Red Pill’s artist-friendly outlook.
“I saw how much time and sincerity Red Pill put into promoting her,” said Kearney. “I read an article about their philosophy in the music business and just had a good feeling about working with them. After a few great conversations with them, I knew my gut feeling was right.”
“Jen approached us in such a professional way that it really got our attention,” said Lauren Markow, Red Pill co-owner. “Then, of course, once we heard her voice, we knew that she had both the talent and business ethic that would make her a great fit for Red Pill. We are really looking forward to helping Jen build the broader audience she so deserves.”
Based in St. Louis, Red Pill Entertainment is an artist facilitation firm. With its own studio and relationships with musicians across the country, Red Pill is committed to finding new models of artistic development and sustainability in the modern musical climate.
Lizard Lounge and TOAD shows - October 22, 2010
We have had an unbelievably fun time playing a weekly residency at TOAD. everything about the place is great and I can't say how grateful I am that a live music venue with two bands playing seven nights a week exists. Bravo to TOAD for keeping it alive. The music business has most certainly changed, but seeing a band live is one very organic experience that can't be replaced by any machine. Its been inexpressibly blissful to play at TOAD to people weekly who are listening to the music. As such, I feel we owe it to people to come up with some fresh material and change things up a bit musically. Needless to say, we are ever grateful to TOAD for the weekly gig and will miss it deeply, but the door is most certainly not closing. We'll be back, I'm sure.
Anyone who knows me knows that I struggle with fast songwriting. Sometimes they happen quickly, sometimes not. I try not to question how they happen too much.
So... our last 2 full band shows for a while are coming up.
This Saturday, October 23, we will play with the formidable Professor of Funk, Big Ben Hillman at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge. Get your tickets early!
...and Monday, October 25th will be our last installment of a year-long residency at TOAD.
We love you very much for all your support and will see you soon!

Some info about the CD - May 22, 2009
If you're into the lyrics and the story behind "The Year of the Ox", the lyrics are up in the music section here on the website. There is a bit of a story to it.
The title song "The Year of the Ox" was spawned by a placemat that depicted the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. That prompted research into some deeper Eastern philosophy and led to the discovery of these sacred "Ox Herding Pictures":

The story of the album is loosely based on these pictures as they apply to taming one's mind, which is certainly a challenge!
Just a little tidbit for those of you who are interested the lyrical aspect!
We can't thank you enough for all the kind words and support!
